Title: Ralph the Red Rover
Post by: lozzaboy on December 03, 2013, 04:58:32 pm
Well with the FFR and TET both having their own threads guess its only fair for Ralph to have one too  :D
Brought Ralph last year after rolling my (gay) 90

As brought, on Disco rims, 2.5 Sherpa engine, big rear windows, painted capping and gay white indicator len's (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2024_zps307757e5.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2024_zps307757e5.jpg.html)

And as he is now, Debender 200 tdi out of my old 90, 3:54 diffs, new side panels, unpainted capping and proper indicators, 7.50's on (currently) lwb rims, heated screen, overdrive, Debender front seats, perfect daily driver  ;D

Managed to acquire  ;) some military gay sprung door tops to fit onto Ralph the other day, always had a fair bit of a gap between the top and the roof, no matter how much I bent in the old door top, and the passenger side one is always sliding open and giving me an cold blast of air so gave these a bit of paint on the outside and fitted. Drivers side still has a small gap at the back of it so think that either the bulkhead or rear body isnt quite lined up  >:( (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0212_zps2c3b03e8.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0212_zps2c3b03e8.jpg.html) (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0213_zps748dda54.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0213_zps748dda54.jpg.html)
Colour doesn't quite match but planning a new coat of red at some point in the future though

Well been going here and there all over the place in Ralph whilst I'v been decorating and see people over the Christmas and new year period, all was well until the other day though  :-[
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2347_zpse6f6415c.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2347_zpse6f6415c.jpg.html)

A visit to Fentiger and his hot metal glue gun  whoo

And good as new, well for now as we think theres alot of moisture inside it but still awesome Fentigerworkmanship as per   RCK

Still planing on tunage in Ralph so popped into Halfruads whilst the sales are on and came home with this too (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2354_zps51773f27.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2354_zps51773f27.jpg.html)

Well after last nights smashing drive home  >:( I managed to locate a replacement pane from a friend over in Whittlesey   wdesmle (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2426_zpse5cc4da2.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2426_zpse5cc4da2.jpg.html)
Even better its a laminated pane rather then the old safety glass that the old one was, quick clean up and removal of stickers (believe it was the drivers side from an ex military motor)
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2427_zps7682601b.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2427_zps7682601b.jpg.html)
Decided to tip tip the screen forwards rather the take the top of the dash out etc and end up with bits of glass all inside (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2425_zps65ac67f3.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2425_zps65ac67f3.jpg.html)
It may of flipped forwards a bit quicker then what I hoped for  whstle
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2428_zps2c8c26b9.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2428_zps2c8c26b9.jpg.html)
All the old glass and black goo out the way and cleaned up, new clear sealant in place and glass fitted  wdesmle
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2429_zps090c8146.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2429_zps090c8146.jpg.html)
And folded back up in place before dark and without a drop of rain, FTW  RCK (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2432_zps6b9fb025.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2432_zps6b9fb025.jpg.html)

Managed to get today and tomorrow off work so spent the day cleaning the mud off the back in of Ralph and removing the spring shackle to get a better look at the damage

Main job of today with the help of Fentiger was repairing the buggered spring hanger that broke earlier in the week, new replaced with metal instead of cheese  wdesmle
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2481_zps2def04c5.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2481_zps2def04c5.jpg.html) (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2483_zpscb9d35f4.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2483_zpscb9d35f4.jpg.html) (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2484_zpscda35419.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2484_zpscda35419.jpg.html)

And then finally closed up the gap at the top of my door by fitting new door hinges (had to paint them first to hide a certain green they came in  whstle )

Been meaning to fit an radio to Ralph as he's my daily driver for some time now, and after some thinking of how to go about it it's finally done  wdesmle To house the radio itself I dug out the old military 6 way switch that came out of my old 88+2, marked out the hole for the radio and got the Stations workshops at work to cut it out on their milling machine (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2503_zps0ee5ea80.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2503_zps0ee5ea80.jpg.html)
Quick test fit of all the panels
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2515_zpse716aadb.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2515_zpse716aadb.jpg.html)
Had to cut out a but of the metal behind where the radio would fit into (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2520_zpsba4c3206.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2520_zpsba4c3206.jpg.html)
Decided to simply mount 2 speakers in a bit of thick board at the front of the roof, simply held in by 2 wood strews at each end after taking 2 of the small nuts and bolts out
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2516_zps1a3b4149.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2516_zps1a3b4149.jpg.html) (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2517_zpsff130f07.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2517_zpsff130f07.jpg.html)
Holes for the speakers marked up and cut out
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2518_zpsfd54d6f9.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2518_zpsfd54d6f9.jpg.html) (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/IMG_2519_zpsa8442736.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/IMG_2519_zpsa8442736.jpg.html)
Got some white sticky back plastic to cover the speaker mount/board with too before refitting, but forgot the pics today as it was getting late, thanks to me trapping a wire for the speakers in the mechanism for the vents and shorting out the  circuit   FRSsml Luckily I had some spare speaker wire and working  wdesmle

As said elsewhere on here Ralph got another prezzie last night, just fitted the ladder this morning, its been around on quite a few Kwality moters from what I hear, some I believe belonging to Mr Scruff in particular  wdesmle (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/1383348_10151960849212274_1828926419_n_zpscf8cb871.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/1383348_10151960849212274_1828926419_n_zpscf8cb871.jpg.html)

Well its been a busy weekend for Ralph, firstly with a trip across to Shropshire to pick up a hard top complete with catflap and all the fittings (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0425_zpsf7bcc4ea.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0425_zpsf7bcc4ea.jpg.html) (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0424_zps5f2f7dbc.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0424_zps5f2f7dbc.jpg.html)
Which then lead to swapping the fittings over onto Ralph (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0427_zps7b5cfd44.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0427_zps7b5cfd44.jpg.html) (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0428_zps274af7cc.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0428_zps274af7cc.jpg.html)
Followed by a trail fit to make sure everything lines up and works ok (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0429_zpsa1117e89.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0429_zpsa1117e89.jpg.html) (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0426_zps53ada6d6.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0426_zps53ada6d6.jpg.html)
And then removing the glass and giving it a rub down, coat of etch primer and then new paint on top of that
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0434_zpse9f97eda.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0434_zpse9f97eda.jpg.html)
And also on to giving the Wolf tailgate a coat of paint too and cleaning up the hinges from the other tailgate too (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0435_zpsd2fd8ac5.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0435_zpsd2fd8ac5.jpg.html) (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0436_zpseea8c068.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0436_zpseea8c068.jpg.html)

Made a start on getting Ralph ready for a new gearbox after the horrid noises it made in 3rd the other week, so battery, seats and handbrake out the way
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0489_zps88efd2ae.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0489_zps88efd2ae.jpg.html) (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0501_zpse487d604.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0501_zpse487d604.jpg.html)
Also took the steering wheel off to give me some more room to get the box out through the door with an engine crane (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0503_zps6f5cb1bb.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0503_zps6f5cb1bb.jpg.html) (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0504_zpsc87973aa.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0504_zpsc87973aa.jpg.html)
All being well whilst I get the old box out tomorrow Munkie is popping up to pick up my spare box from Joskins big shed for me  wdesmle

Well today I set about getting the gearbox out out of Ralph, and after disconnecting the prop shafts, removing the overdrive and speedo cable and undoing the (now found to be knackered) rubber mounts out it came (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0511_zpsafaa318b.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0511_zpsafaa318b.jpg.html)
And then I found the holes in the cross member   FRSsml (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/Ralph/DSCF0515_zpsa2e27620.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/Ralph/DSCF0515_zpsa2e27620.jpg.html)
Not really wanting to weld it up as its already had loads of patches Toby came up trumps with an removable cross member in his garage  Banana
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/DSCF0521_zpsdfcbfa52.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/DSCF0521_zpsdfcbfa52.jpg.html)
Some measuring and a cutting disc later
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/DSCF0518_zps17335593.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/DSCF0518_zps17335593.jpg.html) (http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/lozza81he/DSCF0517_zpsf8ded40e.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/lozza81he/media/DSCF0517_zpsf8ded40e.jpg.html)
Drilled some holes and slapped some paint on

Picked up my spare box from Munkie today, followed by a quick trip to see Rob at LR Optional Equipment for some rubber mounts and then back to mine to clean up the box with the pressure washer

Knowing the mechanisms for the hand brakes work on the old box I decided to swap it over after cleaning it up ( and fining the old box had rounded nuts and a stud missing!!!)

Might want to have a look at those bolts in the removable x-member. They probably want to be fitted from the other side, otherwise you will need to remove the gearbox to get them out; kind of defeats the object.....  whstle

Found a bit of time to get started on painting the new chassis today, Just before Christmas Nuggett kindly brought me up some mega tough burns ya eyes out paint that he had seen a work mate use on the farm and is able to go straight onto galv as well.

No snow but still chilly outside.

Did the spring hanger areas first so I could then put bolts back through to then enable it to rest on the axle stands.

Gonna give the rear cross member area a coat of black too to keep it more standard looking (if not the whole chassis) as this is more of a dark tan brown, and then see about getting brake lines made up and fitted.

You could put it in gear jack one wheel up and use it to turn the engine over. I dont know how easy it would be on a land rover but ive done it in the past on cars. Looking good aswell.

Instead of getting the footwells sorted today for some reason I ended up stripping everything off the front panel and rubbing it back to paint, also knocking out the small amount of filler that was covering a rust hole and the strengthening bracket along the bottom that was trapping rust between it.

More progress today, stripped down TET's old front axle so the swivels can be fitted to Ralph, brakes and half shafts out and started to clean up the housings and realised that you can hardly moving them by hand  :o so pins out expecting to find the worst but seems like they're like new  wdesmle so dug out some shims and a luggage weight and got them all set up correctly before adding a bit of colour.

Yesterday the new drive flanges arrived so first job to day was to get them sorted out, cant really see it but the inside of the new ones is deeper to stop the hub nut catching.

Moved on to do the TRE's, both out but only one new one in the garage for now, so thought I'd at least get the steering relay ready to get out, so removed all the bolts (and cut the mount off for the radiator Fentiger made when the Tdi went in) thought I'd try and see just how tight it is in the old chassis and with one gentle pry with a bar out it came  Celbrt

Back to Ralph today, removed the hand brake handle and high low gear lever (forgot the main gear lever) battery cables and speedo drive from the gearbox so the body should be ready to lift off the old chassis soon now, so with the weather being so good today I set about getting the bulkhead painted.
Old paint rubbed down.

Looking very nice, what colour etching primer are you using under red? I have a bit of fire truck I may rub down and paint in bright red, I have plenty of drab green etch which I use for most applications as its proper lead/oil based and sticks to awt, but was just wondering what you were using  rbchn

After Christmas shopping yesterday and a few garden jobs today I finally managed to make a small start on Ralph  :Dancing-Chilli1group: After a quick pressure wash underneath the wing was off

Got a new out skin to go on, courtesy of the Dogs Home via Vinny so hoping the rest will straighten out ok. Looks like there might be a very very very slight twist inwards on the bulkhead door pillar but not 100% sure though

Also managed to open both doors now after cutting part of the roof rack off and twisting the gutter up to clear the door top, both of which I can now close the windows on  :Dancing-Chilli1group: but the bottom of the drivers door now has a brand new replacement awaiting paint from a big parts supplier which was kindly spotted and brought down to me by the Gadgets too  wdesmle

Next job was to remove the old screen from Ralph, top bolts were already off (as so I could open and close the doors after the roll) passenger side hinge bolt came out with ease but the drivers side was a bugger  trid

Ralph the Rolled Rover is starting to look good mate. I recommend an over seas road trip to Montours as a shake down trip.

Gearbox has been delayed due to the wrong thrust washers being sent  fp so today I set about taking the bent roof off to Fentigers to swap for an unbent one  wdesmle Started with a shuffle around on the driveway and then reconfiguring TET's roof!

Knackered roof and roof rack off

Bent roof loaded up

And back with the unbent one  wdesmle

Stuck down some underlay on the inside too to help keep the moisture down etc and will hopefully find some carpet to go on top of it soon too.

Set about removing the old gearbox on Saturday, so after picking up Fentigers hoist of death on Friday we moved Ralph about, got the roof off and set the hoist up (and then Sara went off to paint Batty Wagon's interior lol) a sort while later it was out  wdesmle

Then it got wet  FRSsml

Now the original plan was the newly rebuilt box would be with me by early afternoon vai a certain Mr Maude, but due to problems beyond our control it was gone 6 and dark when he and the box arrived  Hmor so we set about putting the transfer box and main box together in the gangway to give us some light and shelter. In the morning after swapping over a few more bits its was good to go  wdesmle

Fitting into place with the removable crossmember out the way!!!

And its in  wdesmle

Unfortunately with all the fun and games trying to get the new box to me he forgot to bring along the new bearing for the overdrive so will pick that up and fit the overdrive later in the week. Another job I did whilst waiting for the new box was to line the roof in carpet whilst it was off which has now been refitted onto Ralph finally now too  wdesmle

Back in February Ralph's overdrive decided to go  5xif whilst driving along the A14, managed to get home with it disengaged along the back roadlthe las few miles though, which horrid noises coming from the overdrive though  :( Now things have calmed down at home I finally got the overdrive off so I can use Ralph again. Found a couple of issues already!
Shaft seems to of been able to turn and dig into the housing  dcpoo

Well I finally managed to make a start prepping Ralph's body for a new coat of paint today, not much though due to the weather  dcpoo
Managed at least to get the dented side rubbed down and keyed ready for primer etc, needed a flap disc on the layers of NATO green paint on the front wing though!

Cheers Chris but I’ll stick to this one, it’s already modified for the defender radiator and intercooler and been galvanise too so added selling point (I hope)
