Found a couple of rust patches the other day so got some more gas for the welder yesterday and set about replacing it with metal instead. Started off at the rear just above the passenger side rear spring.

Although seemed mainly over to the inside edge I decided to cut it all out between the good metal behind the bump stop and up to where the cross member was fixed on years ago by the P.O.

New metal going in.

Cleaning up the loose paint around the area and then galv primer.

Then given a coat of the paint I used on Ralph's chassis that Nuggs got for me  (will do the rest of the AWFFR's chassis after a clean)

Then I moved onto the front drivers dumb iron after finding this  FRSsml

Bumper off and bit of poking and cutting later  brf

In reality I need to replace it and I will do at some point but with the show season starting and still got ralph to rebuild I'v repaired it for the time being.

And all back together.

And some rivet countery decals too  wdesmle

After doing the repairs and painting them earlier in the week and looking at the rest of the chassis I thought I really could use a new coat of paint, so gave it a blast with the pressure washer and started to go over the flaky paint with a wire brush wheel on the drill and then this greeted me  FRSsml

Took my time to cut it out as the loom passes through there, which I was then able to hold out the way with a couple of threaded bars through the old check strap holes.

Not exactly as it was but alot more solid now again.

Had a slight weep from the rear hubs so thought I'd strip them down and fit new gaskets etc, took the drivers side out and this greeted me at the diff end!

And this at the hub end!!!

Never had the rear half shafts out so presume the hub damage was from an PO, bearings still good etc so dug out a spare shaft and hub, painted and refitted, and then had to paint the front hubs to match too  wdesmle

Attention to detail  5xif

Yes I even did the wheel nuts too  wdesmle COUNT MY RIVETS!!!!!!!!!  wdesmle  5xif

Lozza,

When you take the AWFFR to the revival weekend  I take it you'll have to dress up in period army signals clothing. Just so you keep in the spirit of goodwood . ?

...and will you be getting some 600 x 16 tyres for it, so it looks right for the period. ?

Actually I'm off to the RAF Regt Heritage Centre on Wednesday (the only time I'v ever wanted to go to RAF Honington) just to check on the right uniform etc for the show and hopefully get a bit closer to getting the radios completed and working too.

With Sara taking TET to Yorkshire for the weekend today I'v been sorting out a couple of oil leaks that I'v been meaning to do. First one was easy, a while ago I fitted a new (NOS) capillary oil temp sender and gauge but at the sender housing it kept leaking despite new washers etc, tried a bit of PTF (is that right?) tape on the threads and no leaks  wdesmle the other I had know about for (14) years on the drivers side of the engine but never been able to properly located it, so first job was to remove the 40 amp generator (and its bloody heavy too!)

Probably 50 years worth of grime  drll

Thinking it was probably around the oil filler area I decided best to take it off and clean up etc, doing so I found one of the bolts looser then the other 5 and when cleaning off the old gasket found slight hairline cracks around the welds already on there too, not sure if these weld are original as the rear pivot bracket for the generator is part of the oil filler plate too or previous repairs.

Cleaned up, welded on the outer side and painted (black was added later too) and refitted, ran it for a good 30 min whilst tidying up and no more leaks  wdesmle

What is the problem with oil leaks?....

Keeping you busy then Loz, its a big alternator to be held on such a bracket - As an idea would it be possible to fit a standard series filler, and make up a beafer bracket for the alternator - hence to stop this happening again. Obviously minus a few rivet counter points doing such.... Might have return a reward too...

Nope because the bracket is part of the plate which would be the standard oil filler pipe and plate, and is also made to fit around the Generator too, you can see the bottom of the indent in the oil filler in this pic, and like you said it would loose rivet countery points  5xif

Well after another cracking weekend at Leafers the other week the AWFFR decided it didn't like its head gasket, cylinder head or engine block any more and threw its toys out the pram big style  FRSsml

As annoying as this was, the fact that I had roughly a week to find and get a new engine, remove the old one, swap over all the FFR and oil cooler fittings too before Goodwood I did have a bit of a panic attack  :-[ But after a shout out on Facebook and offers of help and parts etc a plan soon came together. The engine block came from MrG in Suffolk, Fentiger very kindly agreed to go and pick it up and supply a good known cylinder head, and help fit it along with Munkie and a couple more whilst Sara made sure we were feed and watered  wdesmle
The first job was to remove the remains of the old engine, which Jimmy74 very kindly came over to help me strip down the front end and remove  sh1

After that its was a case of removing everything that would need transferring onto the new engine, and giving it a clean and coat of paint. As I had a tine of military recon engine paint I thought it would be an ideal time to paint it more in keeping if time permitted so made a start of it on the sump and rocker cover etc.

Cleaning out the sump and it didn't look good  brf

The following day the Ninja squad arrived and sprung into action, checking over the new parts, cleaning and attaching parts ready for refitting into the engine bay, and even sending Sara out to a military tank dealer for £40 worths of FFR spark plugs too!

And by the end of the day we had it back in place  wdesmle

Yesterday I got the rest of the front end back together, reconnected all the wires etc and it burst into life again  whoo Yet again I must thank everyone who's helped with parts and getting the job done again I could never done it without any of you  yrck
