The AWFFR
« on: November 22, 2013, 10:34:39 pm »
Thought I'd give a brief history of my swb FFR. Brought it around 12 years ago after a chance meeting helping out at a mountain biking event in Thetford Forest, had a mix bag of front seats, odd tyres and all the FFR fittings missing, but did come with quite a bit of the smaller fittings like the brackets for the front rifle clips etc, had it on the road, gave it a fresh coat of paint and ran it about until about 2004 when I thought I'd take it off for "a year" and smarten it up and fit a s/h gearbox until I could rebuild the original one (still gotta do that) so over the next 9 years it had the gearbox changed, another coat of paint, inside and out, new (Britpart, before I knew better) springs and shocks, unleaded head, split rims, proper goodyear tyres, FFR fittings found, cleaned up and fitted, radios, weapons, etc etc, wiring was always a bother as the rear loom had been buggered about and bodged with trailer cord and missing out the convoy light and nato socket, so after trying to make my own I was over the moon with an nos swb FFR loom appeared on evilbay. had a word with a local autosparky and he said he could do it, only took 3 years  ::) but still probably quicker then what I could of done and now been back on the road since July this year, although there is now a charging issue I need to look into

Just starting the refurb

Taken just before it appeared in LRM in 2008

Off for the rewire

And back on the road this year  ;D

Got some new door tops for it this week as currently it has omg rare ali series 3 ones but they need work as they don't close up properly anymore so got these off evilbay along with some kwality DBG and matt finish NATO green paint from a company up the road who deals in military vehicles, will post a link up for anyone who needs some military type paint

Not a good fit  :(

Thats better  ;D

There's one in CZ as well, but I think it's still in a million tiny bits - the rebuild started just after Birmabright Weekend 2009, where the following photo was taken:

Yer I remember years ago on a military vehicle forum hear one made its way there, any idea if they're keeping it 24v after the rebuild or changing to 12v?

I remember the owner really tried hard to get all the correct electrical gear, so my guess is he will keep it 24V 8)

Had a couple of days tinkering with it this week, fitted a new brake master cylinder to it Wednesday as I noticed it was leaking over winter and was quite pants when I went for a drive last weekend in it, and today with Toby's help we got all the air out the system and adjusted up properly. Need to get some heavy duty rear springs for it as currently with all the radio gear in the back it sits down quite low  :-\

Also set about it with an oily rag to give it a bit of a buff up too

For ages I'v been trying to find the T shaped rod and wing nut used to secure the water jerry can in place and the came across an old hand brake expander, and a rod that fitted though it so a bit of bodging later it was sorted  wdesmle

Also set about swapping the bulbs over on the swankey for 24 volt ones so I can tow it with the FFR and also set about making some number plates to fit on it too

Thought I had all the figures to put the military reg back on but missing an 2 at the mo, the other plate will have the FFR's reg on one side and TET's on the other side eventually
