The BIG Bus 1967 109.
« on: November 29, 2016, 09:38:48 pm »
Sooooo after selling the 2cv I needed a replacement to run along side the 80. In the last year or so I have been using the 80 (the Bus) more and more, defeating the point of owning the Citroen in the first place. Having owned the 2cv for about 5 years and loving every minute, it was time to go as they HATE salty roads in winter and you could see it dissolve in front of you.
After deciding to go for a 109 I found a tropical roofed van on t'web in Scotland complete with OD, Turner drum winch and what turned out to be a very tired and smokey 2.25D.  Having sent and received a few texts, emails and lots of photos I caught the train north to pick it up for a whopping £2500, the same money I sold the Citroen for! The road trip back was a long and interesting one, finding out all its "quirks".
Having owned it for a good few months now and after a 200Tdi swap and some proper seats fitted with built in belts for the kids in the back, its been pressed into service to run alongside the 80 as my only transport. I got it into work on a ramp to underseal it all before winter and the chassis is like new and the bulkhead is very solid. All in all it owes me £3500 after the engine swap. Its first proper outing apart from the work and school run was to Wales on a camping and Mountain biking weekend a few weeks back returning about 34MPG-

I have a long list of upgrades and bits I want to do to it to make it really usable and as economical (as much as a 109 can be) as possible with a few individual touches too.
Watch this space.

Hi Steve,
How's the 109 running.
Still on with my project (@sho161g) and progress is slow with the bad weekend weather we have had the last few months.
I have decided to 300tdi it and was wondering what gearbox you had in yours and what mpg you were getting?
Cheers
Toby

Hi Toby, sorry just seen this. Yes the 109 is going ok, had a few teething troubles which have been sorted out and a few more which still need sorting. I really need a heater for next winter, I can't do another without one. Its not so much the temp as the constant steaming up. I need a door top on the drivers side as when it it rains I get soaked rbchn. It needs some new tyres in the not so distant future but these have to wait as I have had to put what little funds I have into the 80" which has a growing list of jobs (and being my fav it always gets priority) as it has some work to do this summer.
The 109 has a S3 gearbox in with a Sailsbury axle with higher ratios. I try and drive sympathetically, The gearbox was noisy when I got the motor but so far so good. I had worn out the OD on the 80" (it was new when I got twenty years ago!) so I stole the one off the 109 to put on and thats when I got the big diffs put in which are way better for my needs, 1st is a little big for some of the Halifax hills but they are generally working well.
I am getting around 35mpg on a good run, I haven't worked out around town but it doesn't seem that bad.
I will have to come over for a look at your new bus sometime.
Cheers Steve.

Cheers for the reply.

As you now know my 109 is at Landy Andys and he's popping the tdi in (and a few other jobs).
After a test fit he's decided that the gearbox is going to have to move forward to the 4 cylinder position as there were too many clashes using the 6 cyl gearbox position. The gearbox crossmember needed welding at one end anyway.

Will be using the original crash box so that will take some getting used to. Already planning for heated windscreen and rear window for when it's a daily driver - depending on reliability and finding some cash!!

Will let you know when he's done so you an get your 80 over there.
