Series 3 Dormobile project
« on: January 28, 2014, 10:34:38 pm »
I recently made the questionably mad decision to take on the rebuild of a series 3 Dormobile. To say it is going to be a major task is somewhat of an under estimate. Pictures speak louder than words so here goes:-

Front end is now off and the wings were giving a good deal of support to whats remains of the chassis. All thats left worth salvaging is the roof (obviously!!), screen, rear tub, axles and springs and maybe wiring loom if I'm lucky, which generally I'm not!!

The vehicle did come with a second station wagon that is ropey its self but sits on a new marsland chassis thats ripe for some modification to take engine and gearbox of choice (existing 6 pot and series box or more likely tdi and 5 speed) and some galvanising before a complete ground up rebuild using as much of the dormobile as possible. Some othe  bits of the "chassis donor" will be needed but what and how is yet to be discovered.

On the up side almost all the dormobile bits are present and correct (if in need of a bit of tlc!!)

Anyone got a six pot bulkhead?

Looks like a good project there mate ....Hard work BUT well worth it in the end,
Good that all the "special" bits are there ...I can imagine a lot of them are pretty much made of solid unobtanium .

Keep the updates coming  RCK

Got to steal Callum's sentiments and say I'm looking forward to following this project   wdesmle.
Doesn't look to be much between the two!!
More than a few similarities but yours seems to have some kind of deceased beastie hanging off the back of the drivers seat though  :D

One major lesson I have learned from the Blue Dormobile rebuild is to NEVER, NEVER, use a chassis, galv or not, that someone else has repaired.

I will be ordering one from Richards

I'm hoping the fact that the replacement chassis that came under donor vehicle still has a paper marshland sticker with Biro signature on it still readable is a good omen that it might be in good order.

Plan is once stripped to move cross member back a bit, blast and galv and jobs a good un! What I can see of the chassis looks spot on so far so fingers crossed.

What, was the issue with it Alex... Was it rust?

I've always thought that, getting a repaired chassis galved was a waste of time as I've NEVER been convinced that you can remove all of the rust inside.

it was the having to get rams in to adjust it to fit! Just a few mm on a station wagon chassis is amplified so **** up fitting of doors, windscreen, roof, bulkhead......

Got there in the end though wdesmle
