Robur, S2A FC
« on: September 07, 2014, 11:23:10 am »
Collected Robur from the garage where he got some attention to brakes, clutch and the fuel system. It is a 1966 S2A FC, rear springs still below the axle and probably still 109", but haven't measured this as yet. Served 1966-1998 with the St. Johann in Tirol fire brigade.

Then it changed hands a few times and in June this year we bought him off a chap in Austria who got some nasty diagnosis and had to get rid of all his projects. The truck has a remarkably well-preserved chassis, but the body shows signs of being left outside for years:

Needs some rust-proofing and a few spots will need the attention of a wire brush, but otherwise it is a good old fireman - just 10000 km on the clock.

Not sure whether my life would improve with three kidneys, but it would definitely deteriorate with an extra freely visible limb - except if I got a job in the freak circus ;D

...on second thoughts, a freak circus is becoming a rather apt description of our yard, with all these vehicles dwarfing our eurobox (VW Polo) jwdrp

Slowly removing the rust spots and looking around for suitable door seals for the rear passenger/equipment compartments. The rear body is really well thought-through, but they could have realized that steel won't last as long as aluminium... On the other hand, the Rosenbauer company probably didn't build it to last 50 years, which it did. Pity the fire department sold it so soon, if they held onto it for another ten years, it would have survived in much better shape :-\

But it's a pleasure to drive - an altogether new sensation compared to the other two of our fold.

Yep, bought the adapter for the angle grinder - a first-time polishing experience for me, but I too believe much of the paint work needs a thorough scrub and will turn out nicely.

A few slightly tweaked photos from yesterday:

Can't wait for snow, looking around for snow chains for 9.00x16's :) Robur is getting a Classic Heads breakerless distributor kit, new spark plug leads, new distributor cap and a long-postponed oil change. Also the SU HD6 carb will need reconditioning, as Robur is hopeless when you want to start him up with the engine warm. The engine most likely floods with petrol and won't start until the temperature drops a bit...

There are two bench seats across in a passenger compartment behind the cab, should be able to sit 6 people, plus there are three big spaces at the back, each with two-piece door. Ideal for travelling, except the speed, but we've come to like travelling slow, enjoying the views.

Once it is reliabilitationized a bit, it could make an ideal holiday wagon RCK
