Main job of today with the help of Fentiger was repairing the buggered spring hanger that broke earlier in the week, new replaced with metal instead of cheese  wdesmle

And then finally closed up the gap at the top of my door by fitting new door hinges (had to paint them first to hide a certain green they came in  whstle )

Been meaning to fit an radio to Ralph as he's my daily driver for some time now, and after some thinking of how to go about it it's finally done  wdesmle To house the radio itself I dug out the old military 6 way switch that came out of my old 88+2, marked out the hole for the radio and got the Stations workshops at work to cut it out on their milling machine
Quick test fit of all the panels

Had to cut out a but of the metal behind where the radio would fit into
Decided to simply mount 2 speakers in a bit of thick board at the front of the roof, simply held in by 2 wood strews at each end after taking 2 of the small nuts and bolts out

Holes for the speakers marked up and cut out

Got some white sticky back plastic to cover the speaker mount/board with too before refitting, but forgot the pics today as it was getting late, thanks to me trapping a wire for the speakers in the mechanism for the vents and shorting out the  circuit   FRSsml Luckily I had some spare speaker wire and working  wdesmle

Well its been a busy weekend for Ralph, firstly with a trip across to Shropshire to pick up a hard top complete with catflap and all the fittings
Which then lead to swapping the fittings over onto Ralph
Followed by a trail fit to make sure everything lines up and works ok
And then removing the glass and giving it a rub down, coat of etch primer and then new paint on top of that

And also on to giving the Wolf tailgate a coat of paint too and cleaning up the hinges from the other tailgate too

Made a start on getting Ralph ready for a new gearbox after the horrid noises it made in 3rd the other week, so battery, seats and handbrake out the way

Also took the steering wheel off to give me some more room to get the box out through the door with an engine crane
All being well whilst I get the old box out tomorrow Munkie is popping up to pick up my spare box from Joskins big shed for me  wdesmle

Well today I set about getting the gearbox out out of Ralph, and after disconnecting the prop shafts, removing the overdrive and speedo cable and undoing the (now found to be knackered) rubber mounts out it came
And then I found the holes in the cross member   FRSsml
Not really wanting to weld it up as its already had loads of patches Toby came up trumps with an removable cross member in his garage  Banana

Some measuring and a cutting disc later

Drilled some holes and slapped some paint on

And slotted into place, just need some nuts and washers tomorrow

Picked up my spare box from Munkie today, followed by a quick trip to see Rob at LR Optional Equipment for some rubber mounts and then back to mine to clean up the box with the pressure washer

Knowing the mechanisms for the hand brakes work on the old box I decided to swap it over after cleaning it up ( and fining the old box had rounded nuts and a stud missing!!!)

Also got some nuts and washers and got the crossmember fully fitted in place

And then finally got round to getting the gearbox bolted up, after a little mishap  whstle

Might want to have a look at those bolts in the removable x-member. They probably want to be fitted from the other side, otherwise you will need to remove the gearbox to get them out; kind of defeats the object.....  whstle
A poor life this if, full of care,

Managed to get round to removing the head off Ralphs Tdi today, firstly bit of degreaser and power wash

Manifolds and turbo off, had to remove the heater as well get the space for the spanner to undo the bottom oil feed pipe for the turbo

Found the lower middle stud for the exhaust manifold was missing  ???

And the heads off

Area at the rear where it was blowing

Took the head inside the garage to finish taking the last bits off it out of the wind etc

Bar the build up of crap where its been blowing out the rear doesnt look too bad but will send the head away to get skimmed before refitting it.
