Keep nibbling away at it.

Once in a while rejoice in how much you have done rather than what is left to do.

Cheers all
Got the other top corner on the bulkhead done today, plus the two curves on the door pillars. Also finished welding in the patch on the front cross member. Then I decided to have a closer look t the back 3rd of the chassis. Big mistake... How much money do I have to wave in front of the MOT man for him just to ignore that bit! To be honest, there are only 3 patches that actually need doing, but its a case of finding solid metal to weld them to. It doesn't help that the many previous patches have been applied to the chassis with something a PO has squeezed from the backside of a pigeon. God knows how it passes an MOT like that the welding is truly awful. I'm trying to resist the temptation to cut it all off and re do it.
Will get some pretty pictures for you all to look at when I'm down there tomorrow.

Pictures of yesterdays work.

More rot today. I put a patch on the underside of the O/S chassis rail by the 2nd row door. Ignore the patches on the outside, they are a PO's work.

Not the best welding in the world, not great doing it upside down. But its a lot stronger than the surrounding metal!
Slapping some underseal on hides a multitude of sins...

The I did a similar patch on the NS chassis rail, right where the new rear cross member had been welded on many years ago.

Unfortunately whilst I was down there I found some more rot...

Any MOT testers on here? If the tow ball is removed, will this fail an MOT? I realise that in an ideal world, it would be fixed, but so much of the cross member is so thin, I think the whole thing would have to be replaced. And then I'm not sure if the rear chassis rails will take me welding anything to them. I think this must have been used for launching boats in a past life, the back is so incredibly rotten, its unbelievable. The patch on the NS rail was the 3rd patch in the same place. New chassis deadline has been bought forward, maximum of 2 mot's left in this one...

Properly downhearted now. The more I dig, the more I realise the back of the chassis is totally furbar. The biggest problem is that the storage it is currently in is looking very uncertain past about 6 weeks, hence I've been pushing to get it on the road. Thus I'm not prepared to strip all the rear body off to cut and repair the last 3' of the chassis, which is what it needs. I think its got to the point I'm going to have to put the footwell back in, reassemble the front end and sell it. Not what I wanted to do, but I'm not sure what other option I have at this point.

Having calmed down a little, I went over to my friendly steel place this afternoon and bought a sheet of 2mm steel, ready to spend the weekend rebuilding the back of the chassis. New cross member is on order from Paddocks.

Stick with it Andrew - worth it because she is a beauty.

You can assemble a ninja squad of members if it gets to 'd' day as it were?

Cheers all, Like I say, the comments on here really do help, I can get very pee'd off with these jobs very very quickly.
Today, the rear floor was taken out and I started hacking out bits of chassis, ready to build up the rails and fit a new cross member.
This is what I found  rbchn

A little bit of welding later and we're are looking a bit better. Other side to do tomorrow, then I just need to wait for the new rear cross member to arrive from Paddocks.

Unfortunately, pictures can be deceptive! The phrase for my welding is "good looking from a far, but far from good looking"
On clean metal, on the flat or vertical down, I'm pretty decent, if I must say so my self, but on metal that has crap behind that melts into the weld pool, or upside down, it is strong, but not pretty! That said, its 1000x better than what ever put some of the previous plates on...

Todays work, weld a bottom into the 3 sides of the rail I had done yesterday, then cut out and build up the other side.
Sorry about the crap photos, My camera phone doesn't like low light.

Tomorrow, drivers door pillar and footwell. Then slight halt in progress whilst Paddocks deliver my new rear cross member.
