Dirty Girty....the re-build starts
« on: January 02, 2017, 04:03:22 pm »
After many years of excellent service the time has come to rebuild the old gal.

In her hayday!!

Unfortunately some vigorous towing resulted in this....

Oh Bugger!!!

Therefore the bullet has finally been bitten.....The plan is for a rebuild on a fully galv chassis with a TDI replacement.....Hope to complete over the summer.....but then the best laid plans and all that!

When you scrap the chassis keep the dumb iron with the chassis number on it.  lso see if you can get Richards to stamp your chassis number on the new chassis (they will only do it once you have paid in full and proved that it is your chassis number by showiing the V5 in your name.

When I ordered the new chassis for wsl, I asked Richards to put the number plate onto the chassis.
 Paid for it on delivery.
 Good luck on the rebuild.
From wsl's new chassis arriving,it was 4 days until back on the road.

Apparently having caught a cold by stamping a chassis before getting the final payment and then the customer changing his mind leaving them with an unsaleable chassis they now require full payment before any personalisation.

Good luck, looks great so will be even better when it's rebuilt! If only Land Rover had galvanised them from new, how many more would have survived!

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys. Great idea on having the chassis stamped. Will make sure thats done. Good idea on adding the number plate.

The camera is full of pick. I have also tried to bag up all the nuts bolts washers etc that relate to each bit I take off. I think the old girl has been rebuild in the past at some point and the PO has put her together with a mish mash of bolts of various sizes.

Just forward planning to the day I re-assemble.......would anyone recommend using all stainless nuts and bolts? If not what would you recommend? I dont ever intend taking her apart again but it has got to be easier than tackling all those rusted bastards with overly long threads.

Bulkhead is solid enough....thinking of doing an Ashtree galvanised job on it. Many pennies to save however.

Will post more picks as work progresses.

Would not advise using stainless hardware - it does not play well when in contact with aluminium. Corrosion is not your friend. Grade 8 bolts where you need them, grade 5 where you don't. Good luck with the rebuild!

Getting my bulkhead, front panel and many many other bits only cost £60 to have galvanised so its not expensive. And also when reassembling i used anti seize grease on every nut and bolt that went back on it. That has saved loads of hassle and time when i have had to remove any since.
