Daisy, Vera and May's Restoration
« on: October 30, 2016, 05:34:08 pm »
Hello all!

Thought it was time I began a thread about my three money drainers.

My first machine is Daisy, my 1977 Series 3 ex MOD. Bought in November 2008 and my first motor. In her second day under my ownership the brake master cylinder failed while going down a hill, so my life with her got off to an interesting start  rbchn. She was my daily driver for a couple of years until a robbed my brother of his Vauxhall Astra.
In May 2015 she took me and my wife from our wedding ceremony to the reception. At this point however I knew the chassis and bulkhead was getting ready for some work, so I ran her until August and then began. The work included:

New Footwells (Done before wedding)
New Dumb-irons (Done before wedding)
Two outriggers
Bulkhead Mounts
Underseal and Waxoyl
Complete respray
New canvas top

She passed her MOT last Friday!

Here she is fresh from the garage stood beside the next project, May, my 1954 Series 1 86''.

A few years ago, me and a friend had an agreement that if he bought a Lorry I'd buy a Series 1... So he did and that was that. What makes her stand out for me though is she was sold brand new locally at Central Motors Retford, I have the original brown logbook for her. She worked at a farm near the town and when (if) she gets done I'll see if i can take her back. She will need a complete strip down and I'm hoping to have the roof off and get her in the garage before Christmas.

While Daisy was in bits, I borrowed my good friend John's Series 2 109'', Vera. His brother bought her from the police force when she was three years old. She was used as a radio outpost, and when he acquired her she was then used as a support vehicle for the brothers collection of steam rollers and their traction engine. John assures me his brother cared for the machine deeply, servicing it at certain mileages wherever they where even if at the side of the motorway! Her cylinder head has apparently never been off. I borrowed her for a couple of rallies as she's useful since I can sleep in the back over a year ago, and she hasn't gone back!

I replaced her original water pump a couple of months ago. I'm eventually going to clean it up and mount it like a trophy! Before she goes back I'm hoping to underseal and waxoyl her chassis and fit at least new rear springs as a thanks to John for lending her to me for so long. I didn't want to be without one while Daisy was under repair and she has been incredibly reliable this last year.

Here both Daisy and Vera sit outside the Church at my wedding with Johns Aveling and Porter Roller 'Amy'.

I could go on with stories about them but that's all for now! I'll post up about May's restoration when I start it in a while. Going to have a break having just finished Daisy so I'm going to enjoy myself driving her again.

I made a start on May's restoration yesterday. As you can imagine most nuts and bolts are stuck fast or what they are supposed to be holding has rotted away. When I bashed my finger trying to undo one of the wing bolts, the grinder came out and the others put up no more resistance.

The engine runs so when I'm up to stripping the bulkhead I'll do a compression and oil pressure test. I believe its a Rover reconditioned engine. if all readings come back fine I'll leave well alone apart from head gasket and whatever leaks it has. It has a Series 2 cross member on the back, but I have a proper Series 1 type to go on.

The bulkhead is probably repairable, the foot wells, top rail and mounts have had it.

Play stopped when the Gaffer arrived home from work!  trid

Spinny spanner is the only way to go sometimes with shitty stuck bolts. I dare say i will be seeing you in AS at some point getting some new bolts and slitting discs.

Just had a look Adam. It looks like your passenger side has had something take a bite out of it!

I have a new top rail and foot wells that came with it. But the mounts and pillars have been pigeon crap welded and patched.

Craddocks do complete door pillars with mounts. I might be easier for me to do some welding while it's in situ such as the pillars, so I can keep it lined up for the doors. Maybe the foot wells too since the pedals come through the floor and their still in place.

Then I can take it off, get it shotplasted and do any further welding before getting it galvanised along with the chassis.

Anyone local to Retford or Worksop that can weld/repair brimabrite??

Could do with a bit of advice chaps.

I've just removed the angle irons that a previous owner has removed that bolted the wings on and the bulkhead mounts are cream crackered. They have previously been repaired by the look of it.

My intitial plan was to send both the chassis and bulkhead away for shotblasting. I'm now considering whether to repair first what I can while it's in situ, such as repairing the door pillars while the bulkhead is still in situ so I can line the doors up with the tub and doing the same for the rear crossmember.

This is what I recently did with Daisy and the doors fit even better! Craddocks sell complete door pillars. After I have repaired what I can, I'd get them blasted, do any further welding revealed and get them galvanised.

I do not wish to send them away for specialist repair, even though I am doing this with the wings.

All thoughts welcome!

There is some sense in doing some of the bulkhead repairs in situ in terms of lining stuff up etc. I would certainly do the door pillars even it was just tacking them but ultimately the choice is yours. I've got a couple of bulkheads to do and I'm now looking at making a jig of some description using a bit of old chassis and outriggers.

I'm starting to come to terms with repairing the bulkhead is a bit too much for me, I'm confident I can do the chassis easy enough though.

Can anyone recommend a bulkhead restorer? So far I have come up with Classic Bulkheads, Andover 4x4 and Land Rover refurb near Beverley. The latter being the closest.

How far are you from Derby?

My fabricator does a mean bulkhead when he has his eye in.
All the right bits, but not necessarily in the right order.

Hi Gossamer.

Only in Worksop so not millions of miles away!

Does your fabricater have a website/email address? I can send some photos over if he likes and he can work me out a quotation if he's interested.

Thanks!
