Chantelle
« on: October 21, 2016, 01:51:28 pm »
Hi chaps.

I collected Chantelle on the big white taxi yesterday and moved her to a new place for fettling.

The long term plan is to turn her into a camper (preferably Carawagon style) for Sproggle.

As she went up the ramp onto the truck 8 years worth of green water ran out of the chassis and through the rear cross member.

The engine ran, and though the brakes are kn@ckered she drove around a bit until she got bogged in the soft ground of the paddock she's parked in.

I found the front propshaft is missing so 4WD was not an option.

Front axle breather is missing too, I suspect the front axle is full of green water too.

This could prove to be quite a project.

She's resting around nine miles from your place, Andrew.

Be careful, rust can jump.

Like your thinking - one possible alternative if I couldn't get hold of a Carawagon was to rig something up in a 109" hard-top. When you say 'Carawagon style,' are you thinking of the full lifting roof set-up? Can't imagine an original part being the easiest thing to get hold of, awkward to fabricate, too.

You've definitely got a heck of a job on yours hands, but that should make it all the more satisfying when you finally get her on the road - best of luck!

A lifting roof of some sort is desirable.

Sproggle likes the look of the carawagon set up.

PLenty to do before the interior gets any attention.

How about doing the lifting roof like the XPanda ones on TeriAnn's website?

I wonder if having the hinges at the front might be a better idea tho.

Yes, I like the idea.

Maybe they hinge from the back due to the screen not being strong enough for the job as well as the shape of the roof needing the extra height at the nose end.

We have a Carawagon roof rack to collect from the Driving Dutchman in a week or so.

Good idea.

I will think about the roof options.

It may be a case of adding whatever turns up for the right price at the right time.

Just remembered theres a couple of guys in work with VW vans, if you like I can ask themif they'll be able to measure the footprint of the roof to see if it would fit on a 109?

Ta Chuck.

I had a type twp bay with a devon pop top, that would be an interesting fit.

I'd like to keep it within Land Rover character though.

I reckon a hinged roof would be pretty easy to work out, even if you had to raise the roof panel an inch or so to fit in all the 'bits' required. Harry2a of this parish got a GRP hinged roof for his 109" but I don't think he's ever done anything with it? Looked slightly strange, but gave good internal space!

"Maybe they hinge from the back due to the screen not being strong enough for the job as well as the shape of the roof needing the extra height at the nose end."

If you do a frame that bolts on where the bottom of the roof bolts on (puts the strength back in and makes the door seals a lot easier), you could then arrange it so that the hinge and fabric fits to that and there is an upper frame that the standard roof bolts to.

Maybe need the height on the front of a 88 but Chantelle is so much longer, I think you would want the height in the rear of a 109 so you could stand up there.

Just me thinking out loud  rbchn

Definitely not the cheapest option but Dormobile still build and can fit new roofs to 109's:

http://www.dormobile.co.uk/

I believe they also can still build all the interior bits n pieces.
