A new project 88
« on: February 18, 2014, 04:36:53 pm »
I have just done a deal on a ex military Series 3 88", the story goes that the Sargent major that used this around the base while in the  engineers bought her from an auction house as soon as she was de mobbed in the  1990's. He was supposedly so happy with her around camp he wanted it to use as a daily run around ? for some reason fully painted her blue  jwdrp and then kept it for years then something happened and was flogged to a bloke in nottingham were she was covered with a big plastic sheet under which was two tilts  rbchn and left to slowly fester about 7/8 years ago.The mice and squirrels took up home and made themselves comfortable eating rotten canvas and vinyl seats until the day before when he dragged her out from cover and gave me a call ferme.
I drove over there this morning with a battery and some petrol and we got the old thing running in no time the clutch was stuck to the plate so with some  persevering   got freed and off for a trundle i did go without any brakes but with a lovely sweet little engine and a tight gearbox she actually drove fantastically, so a deal was struck and i now have a rather smelly but pretty solid little rag top to play with. The chassis is fantastic with only one small hole  in the  front cross member under the pto hole were the drain hole has blocked and **** has sat working away the bulkhead needs a couple of small plates and both foot wells are holey, the doors are ok with only the passenger door frame bottom crap both door tops are rusty but maybe use able after getting some work. The seats and tilt are toast which is a real same but not surprising the way she was stored.I intend to get the wielding sorted quickly and get it back ready for the summer if we get one i am thinking along the line of back to nato green  and 750's but other than a different tilt and some seats leaving this as she is with the mileage at less than 45,000 the engine is just to nice to pull out and go tdi ( which is my normal route ) i have some rubbish photos from where she was stored and how she is now but will try to remember to get some better ones after i go with the trailer and pick her up.

well i got started with some real work and have removed both tilts and will try to cobble something useful for the summer

i removed the webbing straps and a fair rear windscreen from the worst one
and scrubbed the other tilt having already removed the Heath Robinson replacement

so i now have with some military canvas and my wife's expensive sewing machine a job to finish
how hard can it be  Celbrt  Hmor

That looks like a good acquisition. On a local Derbyshire plate as well. Hope it's as solid as it looks.  cb1
