Hello from Orkney
« on: June 25, 2015, 07:55:33 pm »
Hi, new to the forum!  Don't currently have a series (just a D3) but am on the lookout for one.  Also in the process of restoring a 1972 MGB GT.  I live in Orkney and quite often go exploring off road in the Disco.

Welcome along Dave ....

I'm sure you'll find plenty to keep you interested especially IF you're searching for a series as folks often stick a for sale add up on here that they have spotted .

Have to say after our trip up the West coast of Scotland last year

I'm jealous ....

Mind we are off again in September and plan to get to Orkney ....so maybe we can call in for a brew IF the kettle is on  wdesmle

Welcome Dave
Buying a series is probably the best thing I ever did, buying another is the second best.
Good look in your search

Welcome along.

Buy three, that way you should be able to keep one on the road.
You can do anything you want to do, just as long as you don't want to do it with me!.

Hello chief, welcome aboard. Buy a good'un and it will reward you greatly, take your time, don't be too eager. I've been there ,done that many times, not always good. BUT, you'll know if she's right if you take a sceptic with you to view. wdesmle

Thanks again everyone!  Currnetly tempted by a 109 2a with a 300tdi fitted but dont wa't to rush in and get a wrong un!  Also been offered a rather ropey looking lightweight locally but it might be a project too far!

Pics of the B (currently a rolling shell waiting on a rebuild!):

Doesn't look too crispy for a B! Why did you strip it?
I do really like the late 60s/early 70s era models. Unfortunately ours is one of the early rubber bumper models but it was so local and so cheap that it was rude to pass it by...

It didn't look too crispy when I bought it!   It was a genuine barn find bought for £400.  I rebuilt the fuel pump and seplaced the brake pads/shoes and got it MOT'd.  Sadly about six months later (after being used as my daily driver) the big end went.  I got the engine out at a local garage to be rebuilt.  At the same time I asked them to fit poly bushes and replace the brake lines.  That was when we found that the rear wings comprised of 1/2" or more of filler around the arches and the sills were literally made of paper machie!  Decided that it would be best to take home and strip down before rebuilding properly.  The engine has a new overbored block and just needs put back together, but I have not started on the shell yet.  Unfortunatly a house extension has got in the way but should be finished that by the end of the summer and then will get the B rebuilt.

The eary RB ones aren't too bad actually and can be easilly converted to chrome if you prefer that look.  I wouldn't be surprised though if they start to get their own seperate following as prices continue to climb, much in the way that happened with early Porsche 911 which now have their own impact bumper club!

Hi Dave. Hello from Derby. I've just joinde up too. My mate is an OT on Orkney so when you need a frame around your lavvy she's your girl. She had a  blue 109 safari a while ago, I believe its still on the island JFS featured in the plate. There's a chap in the yard in Derby where I have my lock up who breaks MGs, maybe he'd be useful for bits and Caroline could ferry em up to you.
All the right bits, but not necessarily in the right order.

Hi Gossamer, from a fellow newb, welcome to the forum!  Not seen many 109s here for a while but will have to keep an eye out for that one.  Useful to know about the chap that breaks MGs.  Excuse my ignorance but what is an OT?
