learning to weld is a good skill to have when you have a Landrover, most college/night schools run courses
but don't forget its not just the cost of the course, you also need to buy decent welding kit which can cost a fair bit

Looking at your pictures I think you will need to weld the bulkhead pillars feet and repair the shoulder and footwell, the chassis needs rear crossmember and shock mount and I bet there are few other patches also you haven't found yet. Looks like the door bottoms will need bottom frames replacing (YRM do these)

Also what is the front panel like has the bottom rusted away?

It is probably about the point where it would cost the same to buy the kit as pay somebody to weld it, the advantage is once you have the kit and skill you can do any future stuff for a fraction of the cost... it's a tricky one? Depends on your own ability and situation.

Re the door tops, if you buy new door tops it is possible to carefully unfold the old skin and transfer it to the new frame to keep the paint.

I priced up the side frame repair panels and they (before welding) came to more than a pair of new.

I have one that is in need of repair if you want it.  Will try to get a pic over the weekend, or you are welcome to bob over and have a look at a complete one and one that is in kit form (but all the work been done)

Hi Alex,
Good to hear from you again.
You fitting new sides to one of your motors?
I'd be interested in looking at the sides you have there to compare the two although it will be a bit before my budget can cope with the spend - will do the 'free' jobs first such as refreshing the leaf springs and swapping the rear axle innards into a better casing.

Let me know when it would be convenient to pop over.
Cheers Toby

Well hopefully the weather will clear up for tomorrow so I can finish getting the fuel tank out. I've bought a Salisbury axle to replace the rubbish rear. Will have to keep my eye out for a rear prop the right size now.

Ey up!
On a purely selfish note, I would quite like to have a nosey at your engine and how it sits in the vehicle. Whilst I am not planning on stroking mine to 3 litres (not any time soon, anyway...) I do like the idea of the carb elbow on yours to clear the pedal box with the Weslake head fitted. Not far away so might have to pop over...

Had a good day today as AlexB helped me out with a rear prop to go with my recently purchased Salisbury axle. Also a side panel (b pillar, sill, base c pillar combo bit) in salvageable condition and blue coloured. Top chap.

If the weathers better tomorrow I might get a few chores done ans start to make a parts/welding list for the chassis and body.

Aye shout up what bits you need, I am clearing out a load of stuff from my build so may be able to help.

Photo any bits where you need repair sections welding or riveting in.

Hello,
I got the fuel tank out today and now have about 10 gallons of diesel to clean, lubricate or preserve fencing. Trust me to have 2 petrol cars.
The tank is in great shape and after a wire brush and a bit of rust converter on the surface rust it's already to paint.

After a quick look at the rear chassis its better than I thought. The rear cross member is rough. I will have another look and hope that it will do for the time being.

I am getting together a list already of bits I will need purchasing and welding - bugger
-Lowers A pillar
- Side panels (front sill ends and C post repair sections)
- Front door tops
- Second row doors (i'd like to keep the original paint door skins)
- Passenger side footwell
- Couple of plates to finish the chassis middle section
 - Rear floor step where the middle row seats fix.

I'm sure the list will grow.

If the diesel is spare and possibly a bit stale, bring it to Shell Island and we can run it through the tent heater!
All the right bits, but not necessarily in the right order.

Rear floor step where the middle row seats fix.

Are you replacing the whole step or splicing/ riveting in a patch or two? I spliced a patch in and have the rest of the step section so could cut you repair patches out of an original panel if you want.

Unfortunately I have no step it seems to have been 'removed'.

I believe its part of a weight removal for performance - the same way bits of the chassis are missing!

Well the process is slow.

Other 'house' jobs keep stealing my time.

Did get to get a coat of primer on the fuel tank so that's a start.
Also started to remove the seat box but the bolts in the front passenger floor and sills are rusted solid. Also the bolt anchoring the vintage seat belts into the brackets have an unusually shaped top so no idea how i will get those out. Looks like a lot of grinding in my future.

My impending birthday has resulted in early gifts of an electric impact wrench and a 100ah 830cc new heart for the LR.

Good news is that most of the chassis seems pretty solid if some is a bit ugly, It will need a new rear crossmember with extensions. The under neath of the lowest chassis section under the pedals on the drivers side is a bit weak too.

Well It's going to be a busy year

Well my week of has started with lots of rain - great.

Taken the grill and radiator out to fettle the bottom of the grille which is a little crusty and also to look at the front chassis which fortunately looks good. The rad looks ok.

The starter is very slow and think its a rubbish old starter as all the connections seem ok. Will get it off and perhaps fit new bushes.
