'69 109 SW - Walter Henry
« on: January 07, 2017, 07:29:37 pm »
Hello Chaps.

Well the SW arrived this morning (thanks to Joe the seller).
Got the stack of spares into a shed and managed to make it secure(ish). My next post will be how to get a locked rear door open without a key and how to fit new barrels (off to ebay to purchase).

I had to remove a hedge and fence to get it in and then rebuild the fence - my knees are now killing me.

So now it's in and needing a fair bit of work.
First jobs will be a good clean inside and out, try and remove the rusty sills, try to treat the surface rust, get a parts list started.
I know I need to;
Try and refurb the leaf springs on the passenger side
Remove, drain and clean the fuel tank
Remove the rear axle and swap the *&%^$ old casing for the spare that came with the LR
A few door tops and associated seals.
.....and that's just what I spotted whilst emptying the spares!

I will look to post updates so others can revel in my misery.
Cheers for looking
Toby

Hi Toby

Good luck, keep us posted.
All the right bits, but not necessarily in the right order.

I'm currently moving the rear and front on wheel skate to get it where I want t. It does run but with the tuning circle of a 109 any movement would be  a 128 point turn. Difficult with the skates as the concrete floor has ridges so now stuck until I get more muscle!

Try using a scaff bar under the rear xmember or front bumper as a lever to move it. - It's worked for me in the past.

Well between the showers I have deduced that the front doors need new tops and the bottoms may be salvageable. The rear doors
I can tell need a miracle as the top half moves independently of the bottoms. I hope to get the tears repaired as would like to keep as much if the original paint as poss.

Anyone know a good door welder in west yorks? Luckily doors I can drop off somewhere but the rest of the welding will have to be done in situ.
Might have to put the loose rear floor back on as a cat keeps sneaking in and driving my greyhounds crazy ad they watch it climbing on the front seats through the lounge window!

Tomorrow hopefully will be fine weather so I can look around more. I need to see if the cooling system if watertight and then decide whether to put antifreeze in or leave it empty as I think it is.
Will flush the radiator too before I start.

Let me know those welders' names!
Cheers
Toby

Looks just like mine when it arrived, where are you in West Yorks Toby?
I am in Otley.

Check out my thread in the gallery titled Mandy ( 6 pot stw)  might give you a few ideas, will keep an eye on this thread and feel free to ask any questions.

Looks like you need new side frames, you can will need to use the 110 items.

Can you weld?

Hi,
I'm in Wyke, Sunny Bradford and unfortunately don't weld.

I've just jet washed the chassis in the rear and the fuel tank. There was plenty of old compacted mud on there.
Having looked all over the chassis most of it is solid and just needs a wire brush and painting. There are a number of bits that need welding. The drivers side rear shocker mount needs replacing, the rear cross member could do with replacing but may sneak an MOT.

I will need a replacement passenger footwell and the bottom of the A pillars are rough but again may last a bit longer (it's about getting it to an MOT'd running restoration and then it can be taken for welding).

Front door bottoms look as though they will save but the tops are toast. Rear doors I will look to save and get repaired.
I am likely to need 2 side panels which is a blow both for budget and will lose the original paint.

This weekends job will be to strip out the rest of the interior and looking to treat some of the surface rust.I will also have to sort out my shed to create some storage space.

Will be looking through as many threads as I can to get ideas to save me time and to get the job done as right as possible.

Last question - should I look at learning to weld?
