I actually think it's harder to keep the patina / rat look than it is to restore to shiny....I mean, where do you stop? You repair the bulkhead and repaint - same with the front panel. These bits are then wearing new paint! Then you refurb the axlle internals and realise that you need to protect the diff pan from rusting out....so you repaint. Then the door tops rust out....repair / replace and repaint.

You then look at it for too long and too hard after your hard work and think hmmm, if I just repainted the rest it and regalved the cappings it would all match and look pretty.
