At last.

The Wheelbarrow is home.

For MOT, as I understand it....

A set of wheels and tyres.
Bolt the floors down.
Check the brakes over, maybe bleed or new cylinders.
Rewire alternator to battery (now under seat due to 200tdi) coz the wires melted yesterday.

It's possible the 200tdi alternator is too butch for series wiring when linked to a flat battery.

Secure battery.

Fill with tents!

I hope to do a bit on the Wheelbarrow tomorrow.

Those of you with the knowledge, may I ask you which would be the correct rims to run on this vehicle?

I had it on lwb rims when I owned it a few years ago and they looked like pram wheels, it got more heroic and stable on 204s.

Any ideas?
Title: Re: The Wheelbarrow
Post by: Big-chris on January 14, 2017, 01:08:33 am
I would have thought it would have come from the factory with standard LWB rims? Later the same defender model came with 130 aka ANR1534's..........

I would run the 204's or 1534's with the Michelin 8.25's as they are similar size to most 9.00's being 34" tall   5xif

You know you want too  wdesmle

Thanks, Chris.

I'm 3/5 of the way to getting 825s on the ambulance.

Maybe I should try em on the hi cap and purchase some more.

The Hi cap aint a combat chassis, there may be considerable rubbage.

I shall have speaks with him, when I get to that point.

Today I may run the engine up and see what's happening with the alternator cable.

The rear lightplate mounts need helicoiling too
Title: Re: The Wheelbarrow
Post by: Gossamer on January 14, 2017, 07:35:41 pm
I put oversized screws in the rear light plates and got the tail lights working.
The wiring scares me, I tidied it up a bit but I think a new loom or similar is certainly on the cards.
The fuel tank, uderseat stowage has rotted out so that'll need to go.
I can't post pictures because photobucket seems to be uploading the internet for me when I asked it to take five pictures.
More tomorrow.

Oooh yes, I found a 1964 lwb im in the back and a 1944 jerry can.
Title: Re: The Wheelbarrow
Post by: Gossamer on January 15, 2017, 07:52:24 pm
Photobucket has calmed down a bit now.

The wiring loom is in a bit of a state.
NS wing is missing a few bits and brackets.
Oil cooler dangling on cable ties.
MOT may be further away than hoped for originally.

How much of this butchery is really necessary for a 200 tdi fit>

I may be looking for a late series three ns wing, preferably in marine blue and self fitting.

You'll have noticed the bulkhead support is off too, though I suspect that was for footwell repair.

I made a new bulkhead support for Batty Wagon to help clear the (300 on a 200 Tdi) turbo, still got to cut the wing a bit more this weekend for the pipework but you can see the bracket I made here though

Yep it's inside  wdesmle Batty Wagon came with a very badly fitted Debender heater fitted and now been swapped of a 2a flat smiths heater in the cab

Title: Re: The Wheelbarrow
Post by: Gossamer on February 03, 2017, 06:58:54 pm
I suspect I may have to go down a similar route. The rivet counters will not like the 200tdi so an internal heater won't upset them that much more.
Title: Re: The Wheelbarrow
Post by: lozzaboy on February 03, 2017, 07:04:41 pm
Yer I just did it for ease as the original series 3 heater was missing already, still got the series 3 heater in ralph with the Debender 200 Tdi and just used a "boy racer" air filter on it as so not to clutter up the engine bay too much.

Though I'd bolt the galv bukhead support bracket on today.

Simple job.

Half hour looking for the new nuts n boltsI had put somewhere safe.

Chassis was rusty all round and behind where the bracket goes so it needed cleaning and painting.

Found a drill and brush within 20 mins and started cleaning.

Had to take the wing off to gain access.

The light wiring is shot anyway and the 3 bolts came undone reasonably easily.

Found the chassis has at least an inch of sandy mud sitting in it.

Holes in the bulkhead repair do not line up with the bracket, decided, as I couldn't locate a file to take the dog out and bin it for the day.

The exhaust touches the chassis, the air hosey thing looks a bit constricted, how important are these?  rbchn

All due  respects to PO (top chap), I just want it to work for me.

Any constructive comments welcome.

Has anyone got a series three wiper/wash switch available too please?

Clock the turbo upwards and then raid the local scrappies for some nice bends or shorten the metal on to suit the elbow you have. You also will have to redrill and tap new holes for the actuator.

Following talks at top level on Facetube I reckon we shall go for a 2a grille with lights.

EBay rare toastrack and military grille.

Mounted behind this will be a td5 stylee rad and oil cooler like WSL.

I will try to keep the s3 heater.

Miltary 2a mirror hinges to replace the all tops s3 set.

I might put the military lamps I used to have fitted back on, it did look heroic in the old days.

Interior original  marine orriblue, exterior, open to suggestions.

Most likely the Wheelbarrow will be sign written Counter Rivet to support the canvas habit I have.

I have overbodged the bodges an now have a galvy bilkhead support brackect in place.

The turbo hoses are still constricted, the exhaust is still rubbing the chassis and it's running a series rad and no intercooler.

Can anyone suggest the best way to fit a 200tdi rad and oil cooler set up and provide Matt proof instructions please?

There appears to be an electric fan but that is as yet untested.

I need to have a good look at the alternator wiring and also that for the starter motor as it appears to be rather close to the bulkhead.

Doe snyone have a seatbox with a deep battery tray available as the curren tbattery mounting arrangement is rather close to the passenger bum area and fear driven pressure relase combined with battery hydrogen and a spark could impede progress.

Pictures will follow when i have remembered how to do it.

Your oil coolers effectiveness will be compromised at that angle.

Decided to go with a td5 intercooler and 110 rad behind the 2a grill.

The main starter cable will be replaced so it doesn't weld itself to the bulkhead as will the stramgely burned out alternator loom.

I tried to pinch the alternator loom from the autosparks bag of goodies for Mr Godfrey and most of it wont work on here anyway.

I shall purchase plugs and crimps plus decent wire on t'interweb ce soir.

Thanks to sundry folks for manning their respective telephone help lines this afternoon.

The three pin alternator plug is easy to find on t'interweb.

I understand that some bits of Lucas smoke are thicker than  other bits so can anyone help me select the right guage of wire to purchase, please?

The three pin connector has a fat brown wire and a thin brown wire which join together at the blunt end of the cable which I think goes to the hot end of the starter solenoid (200tdi).

There is a third wire which I think goes to the bulb on the dash board, the charge light.

What size mm cable am I looking to buy? I could guess but I don't want ot either ridulously thick or in danger of catching fire.

Pointers toward appropriate terminals would be appreciated as I am too short of time to keep finding I've got the wrong ones.

The rest of the loom I'm ok with apart from the main battery to starter cable which appears to be trapped twixt engine and bulkhead and will need to be rerouted.

I will need to buy crimps and a tool for the heavier cables so your recommendations would be appreciated.

Next question.

As the battery is just sitting in the passenger seat box,  jwdrp has anyone got a battery style seat box surplus to requirements or shall I go down the yrm route?

I'm also after a defunct fuel tank or similar to serve as stowage under the driver's seat.

I've been crawling around underneath examining bodges and the corrosion.

I'm now wonderin if it's chassis time , ditch the 200tdi and put the original 2.3 petrol back in.
