Last yearI did 1400miles in 10 days on the trip. We're from just outside Worksop.
Will be more this year as the Orkney Islands beckon.
Was on 2.25 petrol power then, 200tdi this year spdydnc

Richard I'll crunch some numbers workwise over the next couple of days ......

Woolen ...yup we'll be bashing some miles without a doubt BUT it'll all be at the speed of the slowest member (Landroverwise ;-) ) AND there isn't any speeding off into the distance and leaving folks behind .
It's as much about the journey as it is about getting there ....CB radio is almost a must have contact wise (And for giggles along the way )

I'll hopefully be 300 TDI by then in the station wagon BUT it's more for the guts up hills when loaded ...We averaged about 120/30 miles a leg last year with stops for photos along the way etc so it's not all blood and guts .

Fuel IS coming down in price though and going off last years trip ....it was something I personally wouldnt have swapped for the world .

Pop up tent AND quick inflate mattress OR build yourself a bed in your series (Plenty doable even in an 88" )

We'll be travelling light (Well everyone else will be ...5 dogs and Mrs that tries to bring the bloody kitchen sink etc lol )

Plenty of wild camping (Free so ideal for folks from Yorkshire ....(The Mrs is from Denby so I'm allowed to say that ;-) ) in some pretty epic spots well away from the crowds .

think I have a partial cure for storage and bed in the back of the 109 as those really useful 50 litre boxes fit nicely between the wheel boxes 4 give you a nice level rear
Title: Re: Leafers In 'T' Lochs II 11th-???? September 2015
Post by: genem on January 05, 2015, 03:02:16 am
Making a comfy bed for two in the back of a 109 is relatively simple - the tub is 6ft long and well wide enough. A few sheets of ply and a mattress, gear stowed underneath or hung off the walls.....

A SWB is a tad more complexicated, needing to get over the top of the bulkhead, steering wheel poking up etc.

...simplest of the lot is a tarp strung from the body, bonnet or whatever. Probably a bit hard-core,  given the midges up here Apr-Oct !

Seriously interested in this so thinking of starting a stock pile of spares, any tips on suitable spares to carry other that oils, water and fan belt?
Will we be stopping at any campsites so we can shower and top up drinking water?
Would there be stops at any museums eg railway / transport?
I guess I will be asking more useless questions during the run up to the event.
Thanks Simon

Last year the gang stopped off at my place on the way North for a day, we did a bit of laning in the hills, dinner in the pub and a bit of fireside chat. I got us the keys to the village hall for showers and proper bogs.

This year I'm looking at another bit of laning with a "Rob Roy" theme...

Anyway, here's the pics thread from last year...

I'm reckoning on returning home on Saturday 26th so we have a full two weeks of playtime ...
We will have a pretty big distance to cover on the way back down so it'd be nice to be able to perhaps flip back over to the West coast for some of the leg back down ?????

How does that look to folks ????

Loose plans thus far ....AND still in a state of flux ....so please feel free to shout up ....

Travel north Via A1/A696/A68 and thence

Looking like first nights stop is going to be in Leithope forest ..just over the border near to Jedburgh ....

Then onwards to Brig 'O' Turk for some of Genes Very special hospitality ...including some rather interesting history and beautiful scenery (As I understand it thus far Gene will again be providing the very generous hospitality of the local village hall (A small Donation the same as last year will of course be in order for the use of very nice showers and ablutions)

Thence onwards to either Oban and across to Mull and Iona (Fantastic religious abbey remains etc ) (Ferry charges involved @£60 for 4x4 and two folks)

OR up to Skye either ferry OR bridge thence to Lewis (Ferry charges involved @ £41)

And then up to Loch Ewe ....WWII gun emplacement remains and stunning beaches

And thence onwards via wherever (To be decided as yet ) to Thurso and across to Orkney ....(Now this crossing isnt cheap @ £170 return  BUT it will i suspect be fantastic ......)

Thoughts so far folks ????

YES it will be expensive (relatively) in ferry costs

BUT......

Wild camping with a leafer in the middle of nowhere is bloody EPIC..... Basic but EPIC.

bloody great sense of both camaraderie and achievement.
The views etc last year were just stunning and the folks we met along the way brilliant.

To be fair mate..... I reckon he understated just how evil they are.....

First nights camp at Loch Doon last year....

Pitch camp
Light fire
Get annoyed with midges
Learn that **** all deters them
Drink alcohol to numb annoyance
Go to bed to escape them
Wake up at 3 in morning for pee
Stand outside tent in boxer shorts and wonder why you put black jeans on
..

Realise that black jeans ARE actually midge covered legs..... Aaaaarrrrgggghhhhh.

Might be worth asking IF anyone has a spare seat in return for sharing fuel costs IF you fancy joining us.

I am seriously considering this one even more now, especially once we know when Alex starts her new job... (Nuggs it's all your fault showing me your pics this weekend!) I do need to do a LOT of number crunching though. 6 pots are bloody thirsty and I am probably looking at around 2000 miles, but probably nearer 2500. With your planned visits to some of the Hebrides then it'll possibly even higher still and then there's the added cost of extra ferries... Not sure if we will be joining the whole journey yet or doing our own thing and meeting up half way along but I really want to head back up above the border, and indeed up to the Orkneys!

Are there any more plans of a route on top of what was mentioned a few pages back? Just to make my maths a bit more accurate...

Sounds a very sensible suggestion... before you know it it'll be leafers and then you've only got a couple of weeks before set off!

I need to get selling some tat to raise more petrol funds...

Just found out my official work start date and it looks like we can join on the Scotland band wagon!! It's dependant on us being able to scrape pennies together as we'll probably be moving at around the same time. And we'll be leaving a touch early as I'm becoming a god mother on the 27th Sept so my presence will be required in a welsh church...but essentially...WE'RE IN.

Just a heads up, your proposed route goes past Lix Toll land rover garage north of Stirling. They have a parts store and a good number of series land rovers out back - worth a stop!

I will also be in / around Glasgow any issues give me a shout.

The new owners have been selling a modern version of the Cuthbertson, it was in the mags a while back.  Sadly they now also deal in far-eastern 4x4s as well as LR.  Recent Forestry work means that the whole of their back yard, once home to some interesting browsing opportunities, is now visible from the Killin road, probably not a good idea.... they'll have to tidy up !

Looking like only ferries involved will be Skye to North Uist and back.... Then the crossing to Orkney....

By the looks of things and insider knowledge (Nuggs) the Uist crossing should be a turn up / ad hoc affair... With possibly only the Orkney leg to book, but   will confirm soon.

you good folks seen this ? http://www.northcoast500.com/home.aspx

North Coast 500: More than 500 miles of the best the North Highlands has to offer. The route way runs to and from Inverness, venturing round the capital of the Highlands, up the West Coast and back via the rugged north coast

looks like most of the route we could be on, Scotlands answer to route 66, looks like there are some fantastic places to break down !  fnky

Hi Gene ...

By the looks of things we should be stopping at Leithope forest on the Friday night before heading over to yourself on the Saturday Hopefully arriving with you early morning (I'd hope for @ 10/10.30 AM  ish )
Then probably leaving you early Monday and heading up to Skye and beyond IF that fits in with what you have in mind ???

I would book it; If you were travelling between the islands you could just turn up but if you are making a beeline for a certain island you will be tide time critical, however there are a few spots I could point you in the direction of if you want to bed down for a night before heading over the wet sand.

You can always change your sailing times if you find something worth staying in a place for. I just wouldn't risk not having a 'seat' booked on the Uig-Lochmaddy barge

The bit at mine goes like this..... Camping is available pretty much any time for landrover owning folk. The Series 2 Club "Scottish Get-Together" will be running from Friday night, 11th Sept onwards...

On Sat 12th I've bid for access to a huge chunk of Achray Forest for some green road driving. Camping & BBQ on Sat night, access to the local village hall for proper loos & a shower.

On Sunday 13th I'm working on access to a local Estate and a bit of Rob Roy History stuff a few miles away.

The usual camp-site is currently under water but I've an alternative that's probably got better views...

Bring a midge net....

Right, that's the first Sundays activities sorted, Rob Roy Hysterical Tourism.... Spoke with Mrs Estate Owner - confirms they are expecting us and very happy.  Be aware they have a Farm Shop with a well-stocked freezer full of local Venison & Lamb. Buying a few burgers will keep them well on side :-)

Still waiting for Permissions from the Forestry Commission for the Sat but they are always last minute. The laugh was the email saying that part of the route I'd requested was currently being logged, we might need to wait until it had been repaired as it might be muddy..... obviously a clerk with NO clue !

I've looking for this article that the farmer told me about when I met him on Vallay; about a defender feature, with the cameraman perched on the rocks whilst the truck drove about the crossing to the island.

Sorry for the  coil content but it could be relevant to your trip !!!

I'm also rounding stuff up at the minute obviously not as much as yourself, Am intending to bring a Jerry can as well just in case. Is any one bringing a BBQ as I have a big bag off loose charcoal I could bring?
Can I ask did you set your CB.s up on UK or EU settings.

Fair play Mr Gadget. You're quite keen taking the wall cabinet and clock. I'm not sure however the 'spiral' art is a necessity.

Pics tonight but the stay with us turned into a bit of a "Workshop Meet" when Gadget's chassis decided to divorce everything forward of the front axle...

Long story short, problem closing the door/opening the bonnet turned into a crack on both chassis rails and midnight engineering in  the barn as the wings came off, a bit of box section was  chopped up for plates and the whole thing nailed back together....

Meanwhile the remainder of us wandered about the Forests and Glens, forded the fords and generally admired the scenery while chucking in the odd comment about welding and pigeon poo....

Pete, Chris and I also set the world to rights over a bottle of Tomintouls finest ....

Hi Mr Gadget, orkneydave here. Saw your message on the forum this morning, sounds like you are staying at Wheems. I know the son and daughter of the owner! I would recommend Bay View garage in Kirkwall 01856 879601. They are not land rover specialists but know their stuff and I have used them for repair work on my Disco 3.  Sent you a text too as you might not see this.  My mobile is 07768 356 023

Cheers

What's a land rover Series trip without a brakedown?
Late year someone's exhaust fell off and
and someone at lapt had a snapped gear stick .
Owning a land rover is hard work but driving an actually series is great and puts a smile on my face.

Drive our series 3 2.25 diesel all over Scotland is a journey to be proud of.

The view and history we have seen have made me speechless.

Thank you to Richard, lesley, Irish dave and Adam for a ones in a life time experience. Didn't think the old bus would make it.
We have had a few downs, but working as a team and not leaving eachother behind has made a great bold.

I have travelled to some pretty fantastic places WITH some truly fantastic folks ....Getting there is as important as the destination .
I'd much rather ACTUALLY try to get somewhere in my series than sit and polish it, UNLIKE most folks on some forums AND clubs .

Gutted I couldn't make it dues to work this year BUT mark my words I'll be dragging a series kicking AND probably screaming up to Orkney at some point next year ....
AND if I break down ....then what the hell at least I'll have tried  fnky
