Emma, I seem to recall from our initial conversations about costs pp n that breakfast was not included or am I mistaken?

My recollection was people bring / make there own breakfast, clear up after themselves ready for prompt laning / spa day, not leaving a load of work for some.

The route I had in mind (which I will send just need to check it over!) would, given the propensity of stoppage and general nattering take up a good portion of a Saturday and finish just a few mins from the Youth Hostel

(and that's normal minutes not racer time ;))

It's getting dark just gone 4pm at the mo and in the valley's things get gloomy by 3.30pm by mid Dec.

That may equate to a good deal of Sat evening type activities!

We will be. Depending upon what time we can get into the hostel, we will be leaving Lincoln about 10-11 then will take about 3 1/2 - 4 hours from there. Looking forward to the run across Bowes Moor, not been across for a while. :-)

I'm not working Friday so going speak to nuggs n loz and see what time they wanna head up, I was thinking early to make the most of the day.
Just a note for people heading through Ambleside/Windermere I would fill up with fuel as the is no local fuel station for a fair few miles. If you want to do any food shops then ambleside/Windermere has an Booths but the local shop in Great Langdale has a few essentials and a bloody good tea room but other than that there are no other shops.
There are two pubs in Elterwater and one in Great Langdale and I might be able to get you wags some discount on drinks and food on spa day as well as the pub in great langdale.

Anyone with questions about the immediate area you can ask and ill try and answer as I've spent many weeks there over the years unfortunately at a red woolly hat man but the walks are brilliant.

Strang, there are a few within a few miles - the Britannia at Elterwater probably being the closest, and is a great pub. It is probably a few hundred yards from the bottom of the 'drive' to the hostel. There is a great boozer at the head of the valley (the Old Dungeon Ghyll), but this is a few miles up the road. Well worth it though. A lot of the others in the area are very 'touristy' and charge quite a bit the wrong side of £3 for a pint. Not my thing at all.

What I will say, however, is that you better save some room for the ale I am bringing! :P

I can give a lift to one person back from the pub....... ;D

Spewing will be punished severely!

Speaking of place nearby round the corner and up the pass (fnarr!) at the top of Wrynose is a wee bit of parking near the 3 shires stone.

South West of there (and not a climb to be taken likely) is the giant horseshoe of "Great Carrs".

Which has the crash site and memorial of the Canadian Halifax. One of the Merlin's  was recovered relatively recently and now sits at Coniston church. Valley below has littered with the remnants.

Just thought I'd mention it.  Dangerous place in bad weather mind!

Okay, so below are maps and a gpx file for the suggested route for Saturdays laning.

These should print out quite well in colour on A3 paper for those with such a printer at home / work. If not pack a magnifying glass.

So print out / upload to your smart phone / gps now, as you may be leading a group n that.

Any suggestions / changes could be looked into / done this weekend only.

The pink Landranger maps 96, 97, 89 & 90 cover the Lakes for old skool types / finding Gerry / back-up in case of technological failure.

Memory-map overlay available on request.

Okay, so to give me an idea of numbers usual copy n paste your name n stuff for laning options

Please Note: Phil's route is approx. 63 miles in a figure of eight (in 6 hours) and the shortest day of the year is only a week later, so we're looking at sunrise at 08:00 SAS and sunset at 15:45 SAS.

So with the obligatory stops for talking bollocks, breakdowns, laning issues and 1 hour (ish) lunch we'll need to crack on. whoo

Earlier one for me please!

I have just got back from the Lakes, and called in at High Close on my way back South... lane up there is tighter than I remember on one of the bends - any of you with 109"s will have fun as I only just swung the 88" round it in one go. You can approach it from two directions, but only coming from the Elterwater direction could I see an entrance to the main car park? Might be wrong though on that one. Impressive place!

Also useful to note (especially those arriving under cover of darkness) is that it is not signposted from the road into Langdale - turn right at the signpost for "P for Elterwater". Also approaching from this direction the gateway into the hostel itself doesn't seem to have a YHA symbol on it either... as you come up the hill you'll come to a cattle grid, and almost immediately after crossing it the entrance to the hostel will be on the right hand side, with tall walls either side of the gate. There's a National Trust "High Close" sign too.

for those M6 bound - come off at kendal - north A6 and come over the breast high road(OS90 U3278) - rejoin at tebay services via back roads - look at map for how to get in services south - bit steep in places but great views - was re-surfaced but has been washed out a bit
for M6 north traffic come back over A6 and after the top of shap summit layby turn in right (through gate) also signposted and follow the A6 parallel on this lane for a couple of miles (scenic but easy going) you could rejoin at jn 39 - or....
also A6 north - after shap village centre turn left towards bampton and then turn right on U3173 which takes you back towards the A6 and shap quarry - easy going and solid underneath - does get flooded in places but passable - gates and a gated level crossing
for those comming back accross the A66 the old coach road - obvious - but turn off for newbiggin before you get to penrith and turn right after the phone box and head down there U3480 at the fork turn hard right and follow the lane through - bit tight and overgrown but a good lane - follow back round and back to A66

there you are - just a few ideas for 'a bit on the way home'  whoo
